Our fall season has begun with back to school at all the schools that support our parish families, including of course GSL; it is an exciting time, but we recognize that this is a challenging period for all and especially for parents, children and teachers.
Your clergy and staff have created a full schedule of online and in-person worship and formation activities beginning in September. We are so fortunate to have such an experienced and accomplished team of clergy and staff in place. The kick-off announcement of fall programs will be Celebration Sunday, September 13, at 9.15 a.m.; be sure to join us online to learn about them.
Our new Sunday ‘rhythm’ will include online Adult Formation beginning at 9.15, worship in person and livestream at 10.30, and contemplative worship and music events prerecorded at 5.30. Our music under Dr Patrick Scott’s direction continues to be spectacular, and although it is ‘different’ to have three cantors instead of our wonderful full choir, it is equally uplifting; look for Dr Scott’s twice-monthly music concerts (Sundays at 5.30 online, and available for streaming on the website). Children and youth programs are also planned both on Sundays and weekdays.
We are already planning for our year-end transitions and annual meeting. The Vestry Nominating Committee has met twice to start the preparation for Vestry elections for the class of 2023. If you are interested in being nominated for election to a three-year Vestry term, please let me know. We are in discussions with the Diocese about procedures for holding our annual meeting and Vestry elections to accommodate the limitations that Covid imposes, and the Vestry have discussed adjustments to the By-Laws to permit us to hold meetings and elections on a ‘virtual’ basis.
By now I hope that you will have ‘met’ Reverend Laura Gettys either online or in person. She and Father Ollie are a terrific team, and she has been a great support while Ollie helps his family through the loss of his father. Reverend Laura has been working with the Congregational Development Committee on a 5-week in-person, small group series centered around Sacred Stories (more to come on ‘Celebration Sunday!), and is very involved in the formation classes which you can read about in our latest GSL Messenger. Reverend Laura is also exploring more activities that may be safely enjoyed in small groups or other socially-distanced environments.
So there is a lot ahead of us, and as always many thanks for your continued support of life at GSL.
